SAY YES TO WHAT SCARES YOU!
Up until now, I’ve been quite strict with what I will and won’t photograph. I’ve always been a photographer of children and their families, loving to capture that natural interaction and love between siblings, parents, grandparents and even the family pet! I adore walking through the doors of the family home to be greeted by children, small and big, and be given the opportunity to capture them (in my relaxed and candid fashion) in their family home when they are at their most relaxed. Newborn babies, maternity shoots, extended family shoots, christenings, the list goes on.
This year though, I decided to start saying “Yes” instead of “No” to photographic shoots that take me out of my comfort zone. Life is short and being too scared to take on a new challenge is a bit nuts really! I mean – what’s the worse that can happen? So with this new mindset, I started doing exactly that, saying yes to shoots I would normally refuse and, I’ve got to admit, it’s been a blast! I’ve had lots of fun and started to shoot things that I would normally have refused point blank. I’ve even agreed to shoot a wedding! The bride knows full well this isn’t my usual remit but has the utmost confidence in me and I’m ever so tentative but extremely excited! To be a part of something so big and important is a massive honour and I just can’t wait to do it! (I am only going to do this one wedding though, just in case anyone else asks!). This year has seen me increasingly take, what I would refer to as, commercial photoshoots. I’ve accepted a cake business, a clothing brand and, most recently, some personal branding shots to name just a few and I’m really enjoying it. Saying yes has been a revelation!
Personal branding is essentially a new take on headshots. If you run your own business, or have a small business, and want me to come along and document your working day, then just get in touch. This type of shoot will leave you with a range of images to use on your social media channels and website and is a really modern approach to helping your client get to know you better. I’ll come to your work place or home and take pictures in my relaxed and candid fashion. Here, I spent an hour with a local business consultant – Dave Kibby – talking about his businesses and photographing him at work.
So for now, I’m going to leave you with a few pictures of the wonderful studio run by Nicola Hall – Hall of Cakes– and a session that took place back in March (yup – I am actually more behind than that!!)
