Newborn post lock down shoot for this wonderful bunch in Beckenham Place Park

Carina had had her little girl during lock down and, like so many, plans to have photographs taken in those early weeks were put on hold. For me this makes no difference photography wise. I love capturing babies and children at all ages, and I think this beautiful little lady was around 8 weeks or so by the time we met. She had a lovely big brother, and along with mum and dad, I was really looking forward to capturing this new family.

Carina had two places in mind for her shoot and we settled on Beckenham Place Park. I have a good friend who lives in Beckenham and she said this place was really lovely. I don’t work often in this area so I made sure I left plenty of time to get there ahead of the shoot and to have a look round. When I arrive at a new place, I am always really excited. I love it if I can find buildings to have in the background, doors with peeling paint, little walled gardens and areas of trees and this place did not disappoint. I spent about 20 mins wandering around, getting my bearings before my family arrived.

The shoot was lots of fun. I started photographing Dad playing with their little man while mum fed their brand new baby. Newborn photographs outside are different to those shot in a home or studio and I always like to start with these first. Babies can get cold even when we think it’s baking so we set Carina’s daughter down on the blankets that Carina had brought along for our session, and started with individual photographs of her. I managed to snatch a few of the siblings together but at this age, this is often tricky, and then I took my time capturing static shots of the whole family. The rest of the session was my normal natural and candid shots of the family playing together, wandering through the gardens and just being a new family.

I’ll leave you with some of the images I took that day, I really enjoyed this shoot and as the weather cools down, I will start to move my newborn photography back inside, where space allows. My studio is reopen for now, for newborns, it will be much more hands on for parents as i will maintain a 1 meter minimum distance (plus wearing a mask) and will not be handeling your little ones for now, but between us we can capture lots of lovely images for you to treasure for years to come.
