Monday 14th January 2019 I was absolutely delighted to be booked to document a day with Steve Smart, British Hairdressing Association (“BHA”) winner 2018, Revlon Professional and KASHO ambassador. This was to be the third time I had worked with Benjamin Shipman of The Hair Movement in Sidcup. I had previously shot an interiors shoot for their very swanky salon, designed by local designer Annika at LoveIGinteriors, and at a second shoot in November I had documented the stylists in action. This shoot, however, was to be quite different. The brief was to document behind the scenes of the day, which would showcase KASHO‘s amazing range of professional hair dressing scissors, being demonstrated by the amazing award winning hairdresser himself, Steve Smart.  Pre-shoot information was duly sent over and it was an exciting brief; three models were being booked and were going to have their hair cut by Steve into the most amazing styles (more to follow in pictures). A videographer (who was also a fashion photographer) was shooting all day too and I was there predominantly to capture the atmosphere of the day. Everyone began arriving for a 9am start. Also present was a make up artist, a social media expert (who would be tweeting and instagraming all day,) […]

Food for Thought Just before Christmas, I headed up to London Dock to take some photos of this wonderful restaurant. The brief was to photograph plates of food, prepared by their head chef, document the staff at work and take some interior shots of the restaurant.  Wrights of London is a relatively new bistro restaurant and is very impressive both in its look and its food. The food that is served is far more than simple bistro food; plates that I would liken more to “fine dining” sit on the menu alongside bistro classics, hand made sandwiches and pizza’s. Upon arrival, I had a wander round with a coffee, followed by an introduction and quick chat with the chef and all the staff. This is always the first thing I’ll do on any shoot, whether it’s a commercial shoot or a family shoot. I like to have a quick look around, finding the best light and perfect shoot location and I also start to get to know my clients. I read a statistic the other day, stating “photography is 80 per cent the relationship with your subject and 20 per cent about taking the pictures”. I’m not sure I agree with it […]

I was delighted when Kathryn contacted me to shoot her newly launched AW18 baby and children’s wear collection for her “Parker & Me” clothing brand. Kathryn had been working hard on a new concept, and a collection that centred around five woodland animals, that would adorn these wonderful new clothes. The five characters – Finley Fox, Barnaby Badger, Heidi Hedgehog and Bella and Bramble Bunny – were all named by Kathryn’s Instagram community and they add a real and unique twist to this collection of their exclusive luxury brand. Kathryn wanted to have her shoot in Oxleas Wood, a lovely woodland area on Shooters Hill, Southeast London. When we first met, we went for a walk, (along with her adorable dog Parker of course!) to find the best location for the shoot. We had to find somewhere where the light was right but also somewhere that had lovely paths and a wooden bench which would come in very handy. Kathryn booked four models for the shoot and we discussed at length how the shoot would run; thinking about how the children would get changed and the kind of props that we needed for the day. We came up with a […]

Commercial Branding Photography It was great to be invited over to the wonderful  Hall of Cakes to take some photographs of Nicola at work in her amazing cake studio. Nicola makes the most beautiful cakes which are works of art and you’ll often find her delivering cakes to the likes of The Savoy Hotel, Hever Castle, Leeds Castle and Penshurst Palace; the list goes on and on. She has a beautiful studio at her home, where prospective clients can come and discuss their requirements and see for themselves her work, both as scaled cake models and in books containing previous commissions. Having had a promotional video made, she gave me a ring to see if I could come and take some pictures of her studio and her cakes to use in this video. I enjoyed it immensely and was able to deliver the pictures that were required. I’ve since returned to photograph Nicola and her colleague at work creating these spectacular works of art.  It was lots of fun and I really enjoyed seeing the process of how these cakes are made and decorated. If you run a local business or service and would like me to come along and photograph your […]

SAY YES TO WHAT SCARES YOU! Up until now, I’ve been quite strict with what I will and won’t photograph. I’ve always been a photographer of children and their families, loving to capture that natural interaction and love between siblings, parents, grandparents and even the family pet! I adore walking through the doors of the family home to be greeted by children, small and big, and be given the opportunity to capture them (in my relaxed and candid fashion) in their family home when they are at their most relaxed. Newborn babies, maternity shoots, extended family shoots, christenings, the list goes on. This year though, I decided to start saying “Yes” instead of “No” to photographic shoots that take me out of my comfort zone. Life is short and being too scared to take on a new challenge is a bit nuts really! I mean – what’s the worse that can happen? So with this new mindset, I started doing exactly that, saying yes to shoots I would normally refuse and, I’ve got to admit, it’s been a blast! I’ve had lots of fun and started to shoot things that I would normally have refused point blank. I’ve even agreed […]

Oreos for breakfast – sadly I kid you not. This term my teenagers, in years 10 and 8, have both decided they don’t want to get up at 6:30am for breakfast anymore. I’m not quite sure what to do about this as I’m a firm believer in picking my battles, and do I really...
